The original pilot was broadcast in 1973 as part of BBC1s "Seven of One" (1973), a series of potential pilots showcasing Ronnie Barker. (Seven Of One featured one other pilot which was eventually made into a series; Porridge). When the series was properly made and shown (in 1976), there were a few small changes, including a different actress playing Nurse Gladys Emanuel and a different location for the shop.

When Ronnie Barker first saw the script, the character of Arkwright did not have a stutter. Barker always credits Glenn Melvyn as the inspiration for the stutter.

In the episode Happy Birthday Arkwright, his age is revealed as 58.

During one of the conversation segments in the documentary Lars von Trier and Jørgen Leth agree that Leth will receive full credit for the fifth and final Obstruction entitled “The Perfect Human: Avedшre, Denmark” despite not directing it, and that Trier will receive none, although he will direct it. This, apparently, is within the rules of the game played out by the two directors during the documentary, and serves as an inside joke.
